Airway-Focused Dentistry for Kids Near Cleveland and Akron
Where Every Visit Looks at the Whole Child
Every child’s mouth tells a story about their overall health. At Great Beginnings Pediatric Dentistry, we know how to read it.
Every child’s dental exam includes an airway-informed approach. That means we are paying attention to how your child breathes, sleeps, chews, and grows, not just whether or not they have a cavity or crowded teeth. Dr. Rachel Rosen and team explain their findings in plain language, so you understand what they are seeing and why it matters.
For Cleveland and Akron area families who already know they want answers about mouth breathing, sleep struggles, tongue tie, or jaw development, you are in the right place. Dr. Rachel is Ohio’s only Breathe Ops Affiliate of The Breathe Institute, trained directly by Dr. Soroush Zaghi.
Whether you are coming in for a child’s first dental cleaning or a second opinion about something that has not felt right with your child’s eating, sleeping, or bedwetting, Dr. Rachel and team will help you connect the dots.
What is Airway Dentistry?
Airway dentistry for kids looks at how your child’s jaw development, tongue function, and breathing patterns connect to how they sleep, eat, speak, focus, and grow. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, airway dentistry takes a whole-child approach, working alongside a network of specialists including ENTs, OTs, PTs, myofunctional therapists, feeding specialists, and orthodontists to find and address the root cause.
When a child has chronic cavities, poor sleep, frequent ear infections, trouble focusing, bedwetting beyond age 3, or persistent mouth breathing, those are not random problems. They are often connected, and the mouth is frequently where the story begins. An airway dentist knows how to look beyond just teeth to connect the dots. At Great Beginnings Pediatric Dentist, airway-centric dentistry informs how Dr. Rachel Rosen and team approach every child they see.
Why Nasal Breathing is Important for Your Child's Health
Breathing through the nose is not just a preference. It is how the body is designed to work. For children, nasal breathing means fewer cavities, healthier jaw growth, deeper sleep, better focus, and a stronger immune system.
✪ Fewer Cavities: Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense against decay. Mouth breathing dries it out. Nasal breathing keeps that protection intact.
✪ Healthier Jaw Development: When the tongue rests properly in the mouth, it naturally guides the jaw and palate to develop with enough space for teeth and airway.
✪ Improved Speech and Swallow Function: Proper tongue posture and nasal breathing support the muscle patterns children need for clear speech and efficient swallowing.
✪ More Restful Sleep: Nasal breathing allows children to reach deeper, more restorative sleep cycles instead of staying in a lighter, less restful state.
✪ Better Focus and Attention: Sleep quality directly affects how children concentrate, regulate emotions, and perform during the school day.
✪ Stronger Immune System: The nose filters, warms, and humidifies air before it reaches the lungs. Mouth breathing bypasses all of that.
When Should My Child See an Airway Dentist?
The best time to start is early. In the first five years of life, a child’s facial shape, jaw, and airway are developing rapidly. Early assessment means more options and less invasive paths forward.
Airway dentistry is not only for young children, though. Dr. Rachel Rosen evaluates and treats patients from newborns through age 21. What looks like a feeding issue in an infant, chronic cavities despite good oral hygiene in a tween, or a bedwetting problem in a ten year old may actually all share the same root cause. An airway evaluation can start connecting the dots.
Your child does not need a diagnosis or a referral to be seen. If your gut is telling you something isn’t quite right, that instinct is worth following. We’re here to partner with you to get answers to help your child thrive.
Do Any of These Signs of Airway Obstruction Sound Like Your Child?
These are some of the signs that an airway health evaluation to look for an airway obstruction or sleep disordered breathing could be beneficial. You and your child deserve real answers to help them eat, sleep, and develop optimally.
Mouth Breathing
The most direct sign that nasal breathing is not happening as it should, day or night.
Snoring and/or Teeth Grinding
Both can be signs of an obstructed airway keeping your child from restorative sleep.
Prone to Cavities
Mouth breathing dries out the saliva that protects teeth from decay.
Bedwetting Past Age 3
Mouth breathing keeps the nervous system in a heightened state which can interfere with bladder control during sleep.
Drool-Soaked Pillow
A sign the mouth is staying open during sleep instead of the lips sealing naturally with nasal breathing.
Restless Sleep/Odd Sleep Positions
Children who cannot breathe comfortably lying flat will shift positions throughout the night searching for relief.
Picky Eating/Packing Cheeks
Tongue and jaw function affect how children move food in their mouth and chew, leading to preferred foods that are easier to chew.
Slow, Laborious Eating
When tongue movement is restricted, chewing and swallowing take more effort and more time.
Dry, Cracked Lips
Mouth breathing leaves lips persistently dry and chapped in a way that chapstick alone will never fully fix.
Frequent Lip Licking
Mouth breathing dries the lips, so lip licking develops subconsciously. The constant licking makes it worse, not better, causing a vicious cycle your child can't easily break out of.
Anxiety/ADHD-Like Behavior
Mouth breathing keeps the body in a heightened state, preventing deep rest and showing up as attention, emotional regulation, and behavior struggles during the day.
Frequent Ear Infections
Airway dysfunction and tongue tie can contribute to poor Eustachian tube drainage, making ear infections more likely and more frequent.
Your Child Does Not Have to Be Struggling to Benefit from an Airway Dentist Near Cleveland
Many of the families who come to visit Dr. Rachel and team were told everything was fine. Their experience and observations said otherwise. They trusted their instincts, and we are glad they did.
What Causes Airway Obstructions in Kids?
Children’s airway obstructions and sleep disordered breathing (SDB) can have many different causes. Some are temporary, like seasonal allergies or a cold. Others are structural and will not resolve without intervention.
Common structural causes include tongue tie and lip tie, craniofacial development patterns, and enlarged tonsils and adenoids. In many children, more than one factor is present at the same time, which is why identifying the root cause matters more than treating one symptom in isolation.
Dr. Rachel works with each family to build a comprehensive, individualized plan that addresses the root cause, not just the symptoms. When additional specialists are needed, she coordinates directly with her network of airway-informed providers, so your child receives collaborative, connected care rather than a patchwork of unrelated referrals.
How Dr. Rachel and Team Approach Airway Treatment
The right treatment depends entirely on what is driving your child’s airway obstruction or sleep disordered breathing. At Great Beginnings, Dr. Rachel always starts with the least invasive options and builds from there.
When additional expertise is needed, Dr. Rachel coordinates directly with a network of airway-informed providers across the Cleveland area. Depending on your child’s needs, she may refer to or collaborate with:
ENT Specialist
Speech Therapist (SLP)
Myofunctional Therapist
Orthodontist
Feeding Specialist
Bodyworker
Occupational Therapist
Physical Therapist
What to Expect at Your Child's Airway Evaluation
An airway health evaluation at Great Beginnings combines honest conversation, thorough clinical assessment, and a whole-child approach to finding answers.
Dr. Rachel and team will start by reviewing your child’s health history and talking through what you have been noticing at home. Your observations matter here. You know your child better than anyone, and that information shapes the evaluation.
The clinical exam looks at your child’s tongue function and range of motion, lip posture, palate shape, jaw development, nasal breathing patterns, and bite. For infants, the evaluation includes a feeding assessment.
Every family leaves with Dr. Rachel’s personalized recommendations checklist. It covers practical changes you can start right away at home, including sleep environment adjustments, sleep hygiene habits, nutritional support, and nasal breathing practices. Where referrals to other specialists make sense, those are included with clear guidance on who to see and why.
This compassionate, individualized approach is why families come from all over the Cleveland and Akron area to visit Dr. Rachel and team.

We are very thankful to have found Great Beginnings in Twinsburg. We have finally found great dentists who take both mental and dental health into account. Great Beginnings ACTUALLY practices the tell, show, do process with their patients. It is worth the 30-minute drive from where we live! Not only did my son get a tour before hours to see the office and meet the staff, but he had a consultation before his procedure where every step of his procedure was talked about in detail and we asked questions. During the procedure, he was informed every step of the way and they made sure he was okay with everything first. Dr. Rosen is his dentist, but yesterday he has a cleaning and saw Dr. Alderman, and she gave us good advice and referrals for his teeth grinding. They really know their stuff. GB has earned my family’s trust. 3 years later....We are STILL very happy with Great Beginnings. Dr. Rosen is amazing. My son had a couple baby teeth pulled yesterday and she listened to him and coached him through it every step of the way. They are compassionate there and will NEVER rush a kid through an already stressful dental procedure. They even worked us in later when our son had some referred pain, he had an X-ray and we left with peace of mind! Thanks, GB!Posted on Google

We had such a wonderful experience with the entire dental team. From start to finish, everyone was incredibly patient, kind, and compassionate with my daughter. They took the time to clearly explain everything to us, made sure we understood what to expect, and never made us feel rushed. As a parent, it means so much to see your child treated with genuine care and understanding, especially during a procedure that can be stressful for both a child and their parent. Their patience and kindness helped make the entire experience so much easier and gave me so much peace of mind. I’m incredibly grateful for the care my daughter received and would absolutely recommend this office to any parent looking for a dental team that is professional, compassionate, and truly cares about their patients. ❤️Posted on Google
